Fit testing is crucial to ensure the respirator forms a good seal with the face and delivers the intended level of protection.
Two types of fit tests are required depending on the respirator type and usage conditions:
- Qualitative Fit Test (QLFT): A pass/fail test that uses the sense of taste or smell, or reaction to an irritant to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece.
- Quantitative Fit Test (QNFT): Measures the actual amount of leakage into the facepiece and does not rely on sensory stimulation.
All employees must pass a fit test in order to wear a respirator.
Avoid eating, chewing gum, smoking, or drinking (except water) for 15 minutes prior to fit testing. Medical evaluations must be complete, and the employees must be approved for respirator usage before testing.
